A record of a possible Viking raid has been discovered on the island of Inchmarnock off the west coast of Scotland. Graffiti scratched into a flat piece of slate depict long-haired warriors dressed in chain mail leading an individual in shackles to a ship. The artifact was among a collection of decorated and inscribed stones found at the edge of an Early Christian monastery. Writing on the stones dates them to the eighth or ninth centuries A.D., about the time the Vikings were invading coasts throughout northwest Europe.
