Email this article Stolen Sarcophagus Volume 56 Number 3, May/June 2003 by Roberto Bartoloni Italian police are still searching for a missing side from a remarkable sarcophagus illegally excavated in the 1970s and recently recovered near Rome by the Italian Gruppo Tutela Patrimonio Archeologico. The three intact travertine slabs of the coffin, most likely dated to the second half of the fourth century B.C., are painted with scenes from the life of its aristrocratic occupant. One scene, right, depicts a victorious warrior returning from battle. The sarcophagus, found near Rome, has been valued at more than $1 million.
