Reviving a Radiant Canvas (page 32)
For a different type of reconstruction of the Tepantitla murals, see J. Browder's study, "A Multispectral Imaging of the Tepantitla Murals at Teotihuacan," available on the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies website at www.famsi.org/reports/98044/. Before the recent restoration was done, Browder photographed the murals with filters of different wavelengths of color to highlight details that couldn't be seen by the naked eye. Esther Pasztory's Teotihuacán: An Experiment in Living (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1997) provides an excellent introduction to the results of excavations at the many apartment compounds at Teotihuacan, including Tepantitla. Pasztory was one of the first to closely investigate and interpret the Tepantitla murals. For more on the symbolism and technique of the murals, see María Teresa Uriarte's article, "Teotihuacan Through its Painted Images," in Pre-Columbian Painting: Murals of Mesoamerica (Milan: Jaca Books; Antique Collector's Club, 1999), pp. 41-66, edited by Beatriz de la Fuente.

Back to the Old Place (page 42)
Archaeologist Carol McDavid maintains an extensive web site dedicated to the archaeology and history of the Levi Jordan Plantation: www.webarchaeology.com. An exhaustive bibliography can be found at www.webarchaeology.com/html/bibliogr.htm and a comprehensive history of the project is at www.webarchaeology.com/html/archaeol.htm.

Man of 1,000 Faces (page 48)
Besides Gerasimov's The Face Finder (New York: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1971), more recent reconstructions, including that of Philip II of Macedon, are included in John Prag and Richard Neave's Making Faces (College Station: Texas A&M University Press, 1997).
