A routine excavation in a southern Italian cemetery reveals the richly painted sarcophagus of a forgotten warrior.
Thirty years after the tiny and little-known site of Galitta del Capitano in southern Italy was first excavated, archaeologists from the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Salerno, Avellino, Benevento recently returned to perform some routine archaeological maintenance. There they were surprised to uncover a stunning 2,300-year-old sarcophagus covered with brightly colored frescoes in shades of blue, red, and yellow showing scenes of military victory and triumphant return.
