Italian scientists recently drew from modern digital technology and ancient Roman art to reconstruct the face of a victim of the A.D. 79 Vesuvius eruption. The remains of the 35-year-old man, excavated three years ago, were found against the wall of an inn outside Pompeii, where he had sought shelter with a woman and three children, possibly his wife and three sons, when the eruption occurred. His facial features were re-created using reconstruction software, but his hair is based on similar styles from first-century A.D. artworks.
