The remains of more than 200 Charleston sailors, orphans, widows, and Confederate soldiers will be moved from beneath the bleachers of The Citadel's sports stadium this summer. Currently undergoing renovations, the military academy's stadium was originally built in 1948 over two nineteenth-century graveyards, thanks to a clerical error. The headstones were moved at the time, but the bodies were not. Previous disinterments in 1999 and 2000 recovered the bodies of some 40 Confederate soldiers, including the first crew of the submarine H.L. Hunley. Unless claimed by descendants, the bodies will be reinterred at local cemeteries.
