MEXICO CITY, MEXICO—The Lowe Art Museum of the University of Miami has returned three large sculptures carved from basalt stone to Mexico, after it had been determined that the artifacts were looted during an investigation by Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the Attorney General’s office, the National Institute of Anthropology and History, and the National Institute of Arts and Literature, with the assistance of the Lowe art Museum. Evidence from the case has linked the carvings to art dealer Leonardo Augustus Patterson, who is currently imprisoned in Spain on charges related to the trafficking of cultural materials.
