Newgrange burial chamber

COUNTY MEATH, IRELAND—People gathered in Ireland’s County Meath this morning, hoping to see the winter solstice sunlight pass through a window box and along the passageway in the 5,000-year-old Newgrange passage tomb. Heavy cloud cover prevented much light from reaching the few lucky individuals who had access to the chamber this year. “There was some light coming in, so we could see light, but the fact that we were there and people 5,000 years ago had been there before you, just makes you feel very insignificant,” said lottery winner Mary Craig.
