ARTEZIAN, UKRAINE—Two 2,000-year-old treasure hoards consisting of bronze coins and other items made of gold, silver, and glass have been discovered within a burned fortress at the site of Artezian. “The fortress had been besieged. Wealthy people from the settlement and the neighborhood had tried to hide there from the Romans. They had buried their hoards inside the citadel,” said Nikolaï Vinokurov of Moscow State Pedagogical University. The jewelry in the hoards and other artifacts at the site reflect the early influence of Greek culture in the Crimea.
