New Pompeii Law Volume 51 Number 1, January/February 1998
by Andrew L. Slayman

The Italian parliament has approved a law granting Pompeii administrative, scholarly, and fiscal autonomy from the Ministry of Culture. By allowing the archaeological superintendency to keep all of its gate receipts instead of turning over most of the money to the ministry, the law will increase the site's annual budget from $3 million to $9 million, providing vast new funds for the restoration and maintenance of decaying buildings (see "The New Pompeii," November/December 1997).
