Cyrene Needs You!

Join the Archaeological Institute of America in helping to preserve an extraordinary Greco-Roman city on the coast of Libya.

As a follow-up to a story about Cyrene in the September/October 2005 issue of ARCHAEOLOGY, the AIA has selected the site as the first project in its new Site Preservation Program. Your financial support will insure the success of this innovative undertaking. Today, an international team of archaeologists is working with the Libyan Department of Antiquities to conserve this magnificent site and make it accessible to discerning travelers. With the help of direct grants from the AIA's Site Preservation Program and from readers like you, these critical projects will be implemented:

  • Installation of instructive signage and safety railings
  • Publication of a museum guidebook
  • Cataloging and digitizing the museum's irreplaceable archive of 20,000 photographs
  • Training young people to work in cultural heritage management and tourism at Cyrene and other sites in Libya. We hope you will join us in the next phase of the AIA's thrilling archaeological journey to Cyrene by making a generous contribution to the Site Preservation Program.
