Heritage in Serbia and Kosovo 1999-2007

(Marc Schneider)

On February 17, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia, gaining recognition from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and other nations. But Serbia and other countries, including Cyprus, Russia, and Spain, quickly condemned the move. From the late 1990s to today, ARCHAEOLOGY has followed the fate of this unsettled region's rich cultural and archaeological heritage. Here is our coverage from past years, along with "Ghosts of Kosovo," our July/August 2007 feature, now in full text.

Insight: Legacy of Medieval Serbia (September/October 1999)
For a time, medieval Serbia rivaled the Byzantine Empire, extending in the mid-fourteenth century from the Danube River to the Corinthian Gulf, and from Thrace to the Adriatic coast.

Kosovo War Damage (July/August 1999)
Monuments in Kosovo and Serbia's other provinces have been damaged during the ongoing Balkan war.

Kosovo Church Leveled (August 1, 2000)
An explosion destroyed the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Pomazetin, a village just outside Kosovo Polje and near Pristina.

Ghosts of Kosovo (July/August 2007)
The ancient past haunts the future of a disputed Serbian province.
