For Greek burial customs and monuments in general, see J. Boardman, Greek Sculpture: The Late Classical Period (New York, 1995); D. Kurtz and J. Boardman, Greek Burial Customs (Ithaca: Cornell University, 1971); I. Morris, Death-Ritual and Social Structure in Classical Antiquity (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1992); and R. Garland, The Greek Way of Death (Ithaca: Cornell University, 1985).

The Athenian Kerameikos (1991), J. Binder's translation of Ursula Knigge's guide to the Kerameikos, Der Kerameikos von Athen: Führung durch Ausgrabungen und Geschichte (Athens: Krene Verlag, 1988), may be difficult to find outside Greece, but the Blue Guide to Greece has a useful overview of the cemetery and its monuments as well as of the Dêmosion Sêma. For the evidence concerning state burials in particular, see C. Clairmont's "New Evidence for a Polyandrion in the Dêmosion Sêma of Athens?," JHS 101 (1981), pp. 132-134, and Patrios Nomos. Public Burial at Athens During the Fifth and Fourth Centuries B.C. (BAR 161), (Oxford 1983). For a detailed account of the "Tomb of Chabrias," see A. Mallwitz, "Das Staatsgrab am 3. Horos," pp. 99-125 in Kerameikos XII: Rundbauten im Kerameikos (Berlin 1980); for the grave of the Spartan casualties of 403 B.C. see, F. Willemsen, "Zu dem Lakedämoniergrab im Kerameikos," AM 92 (1977), pp. 117-157.

For ancient texts see Pausanias, Guide to Greece, trans. P. Levi (Baltimore: Penguin, 1971) and C. Habicht, Pausanias' Guide to Ancient Greece (Berkeley: University of California, 1988); Thucydides, The Peloponnesian War, trans. by S. Lattimore (Hackett Publishing Co.: Indianapolis, 1998); and Xenophon, A History of My Times, trans. R. Warner (New York: Penguin, 1979). On funeral speeches, see N. Loraux, The Invention of Athens: The Funeral Oration in the Classical City (Cambridge: Harvard University, 1986).
