Archaeology and our memory of the past

Posted by Elizabeth Himelfarb on September 01, 1999 at 06:35:57:

I hope this site will be a forum for sharing stories about Johnson's Island and for discussing the archaeological research now underway there.

When archaeologists hear the accounts of people lucky enough to have inherited memories of past times, archaeology gains a human dimension. Suddenly, material remains are given a voice. In the presence of personal
accounts, archaeologists need not shy away from intimate questions about the beliefs and feelings of the people they study; they can ascribe meaning to the objects they find.
