mystery object

Posted by Judith Goodall on July 20, 2000 at 22:08:19:

My husband is a saddler and this object really looks like the right shape and size for an awl to push holes through leather for stitching. He hand sews his saddles (Australian stock saddles, English and Western) using two needles and an awl at the same time. He holds his awl in the palm of his right hand, one needle with his right fingers and one with his left and pushes a hole through the leather with the awl, then follows it through with the needles through the same hole - this makes a knot in each hole and the stitching doesn't pull out.
