I love the idea that this was a kohl applicator, but I'm not so convinced about the damsel you envision. Two Bedouin men digging with us in Petra wear kohl themselves. One day, after learning of my interest in local plants, they brought me some kohl they had made and applied it to my eyes with a matchstick.
