At several sites around Petra, archaeologists are working to understand how their chosen bits of land served the whole of Petra over time. At Petra’s Great Temple, the Brown team is trying to trace the extent of the Temple complex in relation to the Collonnaded Street below, the bedrock above, and other building complexes to all sides. They are trying to learn more about the change in use of the site through the ages, and to learn as much as possible about the beliefs, art, and architecture of the ancient Nabataeans while they’re at it. Walls and floors have been found, as well as many interesting artifacts, from figurine fragments to pottery lamps. All these things help paint a picture of how the Nabataeans might have used this site and of the extensive influence of the outside world on their material culture.
