Petra: A Few Questions

Were the Nabataeans the first occupants of what became the city of Petra? Was the city actually one in which people lived or did serve more as a market place and administrative center?
Did the Nabataeans travel extensively so that they became familiar with the art and architecture of differing civilizations, i.e., Egyptian, Greek, Assyrian, or were artisans brought in to design and build the numerous buildings?
